Types of massage therapy

Types of massage therapy available at Aurora BayCare include:

  • Swedish massage: Using long, gliding strokes on the top layers of your muscles, this type of massage promotes relaxation and eases muscle tension. Hot stone massage is available upon request.
  • Deep tissue massage: Using deep, slow, rhythmic pressure, this type of massage aims to relieve tension and tightness deep in your muscles. By targeting the inner layers of muscles, it’s effective for addressing deep muscle tension and discomfort.
  • Prenatal massage: This type of massage helps relieve pregnancy-related tension and aches and pains in the neck, shoulders, back and legs.
  • Geriatric massage: Ideal for older adults, this type of massage is designed to address aging and arthritis-related pain.
  • Neuromuscular therapy: Using finger pressure on specific trigger points such as painful or irritated areas, this type of massage helps reduce muscle spasms and pain.
  • Oncology massage: This type of massage may help reduce the side effects of conventional cancer care, improve coping and enhance quality of life.

Massage therapy cancer care

Massage therapy for people living with cancer involves adjusting the application of general massage techniques to deliver a safe and effective massage during any stage of cancer.

Benefits of massage therapy for cancer patients

Cancer patients receiving gentle massage therapy may experience improved mood, a greater sense of well-being and reduced levels of stress, tension, muscle aches and pain. Our state-licensed massage therapists complete thorough training to understand the side effects of cancer and how to modify massage based on the specific needs of each patient. Oncology massage is not just about knowing what to do but also knowing what not to do.

Complimentary massage therapy is offered to patients during their appointments at Aurora BayCare Cancer Center during their chemotherapy infusions. Patients remain clothed and most areas of the body can be addressed.

What to expect

Before your massage

Before your massage, your massage therapist will ask about specific areas of pain in your body. They may also ask about any injuries or areas you wish to avoid during your massage. Your massage therapist will then leave the room so you can undress to your comfort level.

During your massage

During your massage, you may lay on your back, stomach or side. Your massage therapist will use strategically placed sheets or towels to uncover areas of your body while working on them. You should let your massage therapist know if the pressure is too much or uncomfortable.

After your massage

You may feel a little sore after your massage. Most experts recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush out substances that were released from your muscles and tissues.
