Orthopedic Care for Athletes
Orthopedic care for the athlete means more than care for professional and student athletes. It means care for everyone who participates in recreational activities and uses exercise as a way to stay healthy.
Orthopedic services in the Sports Medicine Center include:
- Evaluation, prevention, and treatment for sports-related injuries
- Surgical treatment for the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, and foot
- Arthroscopic and minimally-invasive surgery
- Platelet rich plasma treatments
- Cartilage transplants and cartilage restoration
- Custom orthotics
- Splinting and casting
Athletes may experience both acute and chronic injuries. Sports injuries can limit the athlete’s involvement in future athletic activity and often impact a person’s daily activities as well.
Acute injuries often result from a sport-related trauma and include sprains, tears, cartilage injuries, fractures, or tendon ruptures. These trauma-type injuries are most typical in sports like football, basketball, soccer, and skiing.
Chronic injuries are those that result from overuse due to repetitive athletic activity. Chronic injuries may include stress fractures, bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis. These repetitive-use injuries are often seen in sports like swimming, golf, running, and tennis.
