Build on your body’s natural ability to heal
Aurora BayCare orthopedics is known for providing the latest breakthrough treatments. Here, we offer access to emerging therapies like stem cell injections and platelet-rich plasma.
Our orthopedic team is committed to helping you reduce pain and improve the healing process. Regenerative medicine offers new promise to do just that. These therapies use biologic agents — like plasma and stem cells — to treat arthritis or injured tendons and ligaments.
It’s called "regenerative medicine" because the treatments help your body replace (or regenerate) your cells to heal injured tissue. We also refer to these therapies as "orthobiologics" because of how useful they are in treating orthopedic injuries.
PRP and Stem Cell Injections
Orthobiologics are derived from materials like bone marrow and plasma that naturally occur in your body. When injected into a targeted area, these treatments reduce pain and promote healing.
We offer the following regenerative medicine therapies:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a protein-rich substance created from your blood. PRP injections deliver high concentrations of growth factors to areas of injury to help promote healing/repair of injured tissue.
- Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is made from your own bone marrow which includes platelets and stem cells.
Both treatment options help jump-start the healing process and can provide effective pain relief.
Repair Damaged Joints, Tendons and Ligaments
PRP procedures and stem cell therapies are used to treat a range of orthopedic conditions. These injections can provide long-lasting relief from arthritis, tendonitis, and joint injuries.
The goal of these treatments is to promote new tissue growth, preserve existing healthy tissue, decrease pain, and improve your mobility.
Some conditions that can be treated with cell therapies include:
- Arthritis (including hip, shoulder, and knee arthritis)
- Tendon injuries (including rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow, Achilles tendon injury, hamstring tendon injury, etc.)
- Plantar fasciitis
- Muscle strain
Treatment and Recovery
Both PRP injections and BMAC injections are done here in the clinic. For both therapies, your doctor will need to harvest the necessary materials from your body and prepare them for injection.
- The PRP injection process takes about an hour. You blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to collect the resources.
- The BMAC injection process takes about two hours. This treatment first requires drawing bone marrow from your pelvis.
At Aurora BayCare, we use ultrasound to guide our orthobiologic injections. This ensures precise placement of your treatment to maximize effectiveness and safety. Treatments are provided by a board-certified physician with an advanced specialty in regenerative medicine.
Generally, patients can begin physical therapy within two weeks after an orthobiologic injection. Other recovery benchmarks, such as return-to-work and return-to-play, depend on the nature of your condition.
Insurance Coverage for PRP and Stem Cell Therapy
Generally, insurance plans cover a physician consultation. During an initial appointment, you and your doctor will discuss if you are a good candidate for PRP injections or stem cell therapy. Most insurance programs do not provide coverage for the actual injections. Check with your plan provider.
