Early detection for heart disease
Calcium scoring is a fast, affordable test that can help save your life.
Heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women. But one quick test can tell you if you’re at risk, even before you have any symptoms.
Calcium scoring is one of the most advanced methods available for detecting heart disease in its earliest stages. At Aurora BayCare, this test is available to anyone who wants to know their risk.
Cardiac Calcium Screening
No referral necessary
If you have a family history of heart disease or are over the age of 45, you should consider a Calcium Score Screening. This non-invasive CT scan is a way of detecting calcified plaque in the coronary arteries.
Calcified plaque is a build-up of calcium, fat and other substances. Over time, this plaque can narrow your arteries and close off blood flow to the heart. That can cause a heart attack.
Calcium scoring is painless and only takes a few minutes. Your calcium score will provide you with a personal risk level for heart disease and coronary events. CT calcium scoring will give you two important pieces of information. It will:
- Identify the presence of calcified plaque in your arteries
- Determine the degree of plaque in your arteries
Early detection is key to prevention. Once you have this information, you can decide if you need to take additional steps to protect your heart.
Get Screened If You’re At Risk
The following factors may increase your risk for coronary artery disease:
- You are a male over 45 or a woman over 55
- You have a family history of heart disease
- You smoke or you live with a regular smoker
- You have high cholesterol or high blood pressure
You are overweight or don’t exercise much
- You have diabetes
Heart disease is very common. A calcium score would help you understand your risk so you can take steps early, when the disease is most treatable.
If you already have heart disease this test may be unnecessary.
