Aurora BayCare offers leading-edge treatment for neurological cancer
Some of the treatments we offer include:
- Neurosurgery: Our neurosurgeons remove as much of your brain tumor as possible while preserving the surrounding brain tissue. Our technologies include the use of 3D navigation systems that allow your neurosurgeon to locate small or deep-seated brain tumors with precision.
- Radiation Therapy: We are the first regional provider to offer intracranial radiation. After a tumor has been removed, intracranial radiation therapy gives us the ability to target a radioactive isotope directly into the tumor site to treat any residual cancer cells.
Other radiotherapy treatments include intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), rotational RapidArcTM Therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy capabilities (SRT).
- Chemotherapy: Our neuro-oncologist will evaluate the appropriate chemotherapy for your cancer. We provide intrathecal chemotherapy that delivers drugs directly to the brain and spinal cord. We also offer the use of anti-angiogenic agents (which target the blood vessels feeding the tumor) and new molecular agents available through clinical trials.
- NovoTTF therapy: Also known by the brand name Novocure, NovoTTF is a new technology for treating solid tumors. NovoTTF therapy has been show to slow or stop tumor growth by inducing cell death. NovoTTF creates an artificial, alternating electric field within the tumor. This disrupts cell division and can cause complete destruction of dividing cancer cells. The therapy is delivered via non-invasive traducer arrays (picture a cap of electrodes) in the affected tumor area. NovoTTF therapy can target cancer cells without harming normal cells. In clinical trials, it was show to be as effective as chemotherapy for patients with a recurrent glioblastoma .
