Other Sleep Disorders

Parasomnias

A parasomnia is any sleep-related behaviors. These sleep disorders, such as night terrors or sleepwalking, are especially common in children. Behaviors that disrupt the household or result in injury to the person or bed partner may benefit from a sleep evaluation.

Narcolepsy

Unlike insomniacs who have trouble sleeping, people with narcolepsy have trouble staying awake. They often complain of chronic sleepiness and falling asleep at inappropriate times during the day.

There are often three types of symptoms associated with narcolepsy:

  • Cataplexy – a sudden muscular weakness brought on by a strong emotion such as anger, surprise, laughter or sadness.
  • Sleep paralysis – a feeling of being unable to move when falling asleep or awakening.
  • Hypnagogic hallucinations – vivid vision, which occur just upon falling asleep or awakening.
