More than 2.5 million Americans suffer from a variety of wounds, with an annual cost of up to $3.5 billion.

Successful wound care is an integral part of physical healing, allowing the patient to lead a full and productive life. Rehabilitation professionals play an important role in wound care by expediting healing, restoring normal function, and educating the patient and families on wound prevention.

Experienced staff

Aurora BayCare's physical and occupational therapists, along with a Board Certified Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse, have participated in post-degree training in wound care management, which allows them to use state-of-the-art treatment strategies and techniques.

Individualized treatment

To determine the proper individualized course of treatment for our patients, we conduct a thorough evaluation of all wound types, including:

  • Venous insufficiency
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Arterial insufficiency
  • Chronic, non-healing wounds
  • Surgical site wounds
  • Burns
  • Traumatic injury

Comprehensive care provided

Our comprehensive evaluation includes an assessment of the patient's functional limitations in conjunction with their wound care needs. Physical and occupational therapists provide individualized treatment to promote wound healing and a return to normal function and mobility.

After evaluating the patient's needs, therapists may implement any of the following skilled treatments:

  • Hydrotherapy
  • Skilled dressings changes
  • Debridement
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Patient education
  • Vacuum assisted closure
  • Gait analysis with assistive device
  • Recommendation on protective footwear
