Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET) is a minimally invasive treatment
option for patients with lower back pain that does not respond to conventional
treatments.
Heat is administered to the affected disc to help desensitize pain receptors in
the area. This is done by inserting a wire, called an electrothermal
catheter, through which an electrical current passes. It is performed as an
outpatient procedure while the patient is awake and under a local anesthesia
with mild sedation.
Radiofrequency ablation is used to destroy the nerves that supply the facet
joints in the spine. These joints are the small posterior joints on either side
of the spine and can be a source of back pain.
Radiofrequency nerve ablation uses radio waves to produce heat. By generating
heat around a nerve, the nerve’s ability to transmit pain is destroyed. It can
be used to treat all types of pain, ranging from chronic neck pain to low back
pain.
Spinal injections can serve two purposes – relieve pain and as a
diagnostic tool to help doctors determine the cause of back pain. Two types of
spinal injections are:
Facet Joint Injections help to reduce inflammation and pain originating from one
or more facet joints. These joints are located at the back of the spine and are
important to movement.
Epidural Steroid Injections administer pain-relieving medications into the
epidural space. The medicine coats the nerve roots and the outside lining of
the facet joints.
Percutaneous Disc Decompression is used in the treatment of contained
herniated discs and is a minimally invasive procedure. A needle emitting radio
waves is used to dissolve excess tissue, reducing the pressure inside the disc
and the nerves. The reduction of excess pressure helps alleviate the pain.
Spinal cord stimulation is a therapy where electrical impulses are used to block
pain from being perceived in the brain. Instead of pain, you feel a mild,
tingling sensation. An implanted lead (a flexible, insulated wire), which is
powered by an implanted battery or receiver, is placed near your spinal cord.
This lead and an implanted stimulator send electrical impulses that block the
pain messages to your brain.

Complementary Medicine
Chiropractic is a branch of health care known as complementary medicine that
maintains a patient’s health and wellbeing through spinal manipulation, which
involves adjusting the vertebrae in the spinal column, without the use of drugs
or surgery.
Doctors of chiropractic frequently treat individuals with neuromusculoskeletal
complaints, such as headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low back pain and
sciatica. Chiropractors also treat patients with osteoarthritis, spinal disk
conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains.
Treatment recommendations are typically focused on the reduction of pain or
other symptoms. Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the spinal
column, the nervous system, the circulatory system, and a patient’s nutrition,
exercise, and other lifestyle choices. The practice examines the effect these
factors have on a patient's overall health.
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic massage and therapeutic touch are used as complements to traditional
types of health care. Therapeutic massage can enhance physical therapy,
occupational therapy, chiropractic and psychotherapy. It can assist in temporary
or long-term relief of the impact that physical and emotional challenges have on
your body.
Therapeutic massage is especially beneficial to address the physical and
emotional demands of caregivers and others who stress their bodies through daily
activities. Therapeutic touch can calm, relax and reduce stress. This can
provide relief for people dealing with cancer or other ailments, thereby
improving their quality of life.
