NeuroCare Brain & Spine Center™ - Common Spinal Conditions
Spondylolysis
Spondylolysis is a stress fracture or defect involving the pars intra-articularis
of one of the vertebrae of the spine. The pars intra-articularis connects the
vertebral body (front part of the vertebrae) to the back of the vertebrae.
A fracture can occur at the pars intra-articularis due to repetitive
movements of extension and rotation which lead to an increase in forces in the
lumbar spine. Since the pars intra-articularis is small, it is unable to absorb
repetitive shock which can lead to fracture.
This condition occurs in the lower back. Left untreated, spondylolysis can
lead to spondylolisthesis. This is a more serious condition in which one
vertebra slips forward on the one below it. Both conditions can cause back pain
by disturbing biomechanics in the back or by pinching a nerve as it leaves the
spinal column.
Symptoms may include:
- Pain across the lower back
- Spasms in the back and hamstring muscles
- Pain radiating down the leg
- However, many people with spondylolysis have no symptoms at all.
