NeuroCare Brain & Spine Center™ - Common Spinal Conditions
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease – also known as osteoarthritis of the spine – is
one of the most common disorders of the lower spine. As part of the aging
process, the discs in the back begin to change. The discs dry out and lose the
ability to act as shock absorbers. This change is called degeneration. Disc
degeneration can cause back pain.
Depending on the severity of the pain, patients with degenerative disc
disease have several treatment options, which range from anti-inflammatory
medicine and physical therapy to steroid injections and artificial disc surgery.
