NeuroCare Brain & Spine Center™ - Multiple Sclerosis
Aurora BayCare Medical Center’s Multiple Sclerosis Clinic is Northeastern
Wisconsin’s only integrated MS Clinic. It is designed to be a “pathway” through
our comprehensive, patient-centered program. Our goal is to guide patients
through and coordinate their care by connecting them to our interdisciplinary
team of specialists.
Aurora BayCare’s MS Clinic team of specialists includes:
Neurology: Neurologists specialize in the diagnosis of nervous system disorders
and help determine what course of treatment is appropriate. A patient’s care is
managed by both physicians and a nurse practitioner.
Neuropsychology: Neuropsychologists do special testing to look at brain
functions such as memory and attention.
Occupational Therapy: Occupational therapists work with patients to
helping them perform the activities of your daily life, both at home and at
work. Occupational therapy (OT) is important in helping persons with MS maintain
productive living. OT addresses five major areas essential to independence:
- Managing fatigue through learning to conserve energy, simplify work and
deal with stress.
- Making the most of available body strength and coordination.
- Providing tools and techniques to promote independence in the home,
including modifying the environment.
- Compensating for difficulties with vision, loss of sensation and
planning.
- Vocational guidance and training.
Speech and Language Pathology: The ability to communicate effectively is
important to everyone. Multiple Sclerosis damages myelin – a material that
surrounds and protects nerve fibers, and helps to conduct messages to and from
the brain – and nerve cells in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord. This, in
turn, affects a variety of functions handled by the brain. Such functions may
involve: speech, voice, swallowing and cognition.
Physical Therapy: A physical therapist will work with patients to assess
their gait, balance, and risk for falls as well. Physical therapy focuses on
ways for MS patients to:
- Stretch their muscles
- Regain strength
- Build up their endurance
- Improve their balance
- Learn about assistive devices for walking
- Be active even when in a wheelchair
