Raising the bar for cardiac care
Electrophysiology
Electrophysiology is a sub-specialized field of Cardiology that deals with the diagnosis and management of heart rhythm abnormalities. During an electrophysiology study, a specially trained cardiac specialist known as an electrophysiologist may provoke arrhythmia events and collect data about the flow of electricity during actual events. As a result these studies can help locate the specific areas of heart tissue that give rise to the abnormal electrical impulses that cause arrhythmias. This detailed electrical flow information provides valuable diagnostic and, therefore, treatment information.
Our electrophysiologists at Aurora BayCare Medical Center provide the most advanced and complex treatments available and perform the full breadth of electrophysiology tests and procedures including:
- Electrophysiology studies
- Tilt table testing
- Radiofrequency catheter ablation
- Complex ablation of advanced arrhythmias including:
- SVT (supraventricular tachycardia) - a rhythm disorder which
involves the upper chambers of the heart
- VT (ventricular tachycardia) - a fast heart rhythm that starts in the lower part of the heart (ventricles). If left untreated, some forms of ventricular tachycardia may worsen and lead to ventricular fibrillation, which can be life-threatening
- AFIB (atrial fibrillation) - a cardiac abnormal heart rhythm that involves the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart
- Pacemaker implantation
- Defibrillator implantation and testing
- Biventricular device implantation
- Lead extraction
- Cardioversion - procedure where an electrical shock is delivered to the heart to convert an abnormal heart rhythm back to a normal rhythm
